Residents of Barangoni in Bwari Area Council have expressed relief and appreciation following the evacuation of a long-standing refuse dump by the Executive Chairman of Bwari Area Council, Joshua Ishaku.
For many years, the refuse dump had become a major environmental concern, leaving the area unsightly and creating an unhealthy living environment for residents. The accumulation of solid waste produced offensive odours, attracted flies, mosquitoes, rats, and other disease-carrying pests, while also polluting the surrounding environment.
Environmental and public health experts warn that unmanaged refuse dumps can expose communities to serious health risks. Decomposing waste serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes that spread malaria, flies that contaminate food, and rodents capable of transmitting diseases such as leptospirosis and Lassa fever. During the rainy season, waste can block drainage channels, leading to flooding and stagnant water that further encourages mosquito breeding.
Open refuse dumps also release harmful gases and unpleasant smells, reducing air quality and affecting the wellbeing of nearby residents. In addition, plastic waste and other non-biodegradable materials contaminate the soil and nearby water sources, posing long-term environmental challenges and threatening public health.
The situation in Barangoni had made parts of the community uncomfortable for residents, business owners, and visitors, with many calling for government intervention to address the growing environmental hazard.
That long-standing challenge has now been addressed following the clearance of the refuse dump by the administration of Bwari Area Council Chairman, Joshua Ishaku. The cleanup has restored the appearance of the area and significantly improved environmental sanitation, bringing renewed hope to the community.
Speaking after the exercise, Chairman Joshua Ishaku urged residents to take ownership of their environment by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding indiscriminate dumping. He emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility between the government and the people, adding that sustained sanitation efforts are essential for protecting public health and creating a healthier community.
Residents welcomed the development, describing it as a timely intervention that has transformed the area. Many expressed gratitude to the chairman for responding to a long-standing community concern and called on both residents and the council to work together to ensure the location does not return to its former state.
