As September approaches, uncertainty is beginning to grow among parents, students and residents across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over the resumption of government secondary schools.
The concern is largely linked to longstanding grievances among teachers, including complaints over unpaid entitlements and delayed promotions. Some teachers have alleged that their last promotions were effected during the previous administration and that they have not received subsequent promotions since the assumption of office of the current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Another issue being raised by teachers concerns the management of government finances, particularly the distinction between recurrent and capital expenditure. While recurrent expenditure covers obligations such as salaries and other personnel costs, capital expenditure is generally allocated to infrastructure and other development projects.
Some teachers have expressed concern over what they perceive as the diversion or use of funds meant for recurrent obligations to finance projects. These claims, however, require clarification from the relevant FCT authorities and should not be treated as established facts without official confirmation.

With these concerns still being discussed among teachers, some parents and members of the public are beginning to question whether government secondary schools across the FCT will resume as scheduled in September.
However, there is currently no official indication that schools will not resume. At the time of this report, no formal statement announcing a strike or suspension of the September resumption has been issued by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the FCT or any other recognised teachers’ body.
It is therefore important for the public to distinguish between concerns being expressed by teachers and an officially declared industrial action. Until a competent authority makes an announcement, reports of a possible disruption should be treated with caution.
