AI in education: Help or hindrance?

Artificial Intelligence (AI), has become an increasingly important part of modern education, transforming how students learn and how teachers deliver instruction. Despite these advantages, the growing use of AI in education has also raised concerns that it may reduce students’ critical  thinking, creativity and problem-solving abilities. Students in this interview by Mercy Ayankunle, share their views

Aderinto Wuraola, 15 yrs old

I use AI tools mainly for my schoolwork, and this especially when I come across difficult topics that I do not understand in class. They help explain complex concepts in simpler terms and also provide practice questions that help me prepare for tests and examinations. Because of this, studying has become more interesting and less stressful.

AI also  gives students the opportunity to learn at their own pace and build confidence in subjects they may have struggled with before.

However, I think many students are beginning to rely too much on AI. Instead of thinking deep or attempting to solve problems on their own, some prefer to get instant answers.  This could affect their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Ayankunle Janet, 16 yrs old

Artificial intelligence has become an important study companion for me. I use tools like ChatGPT to understand difficult homework, brainstorm ideas for assignments, and prepare for examinations by practicing questions. One of the things I like most about AI is that it explains topics in different ways and breaks complex concepts into simple, step-by-step lessons, making learning much easier.

However, I believe some students are becoming too dependent on AI. Instead of attempting to solve problems on their own, they simply copy and paste answers without trying first. This can prevent them from developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

I have applied  AI tools, especially ChatGPT, in understanding topics I find difficult, both in my schoolwork and in everyday life. I believe AI has made learning easier because it gives students a deeper understanding of what they are taught in class. Whether it is a lesson explained by a teacher or a homework assignment, AI can provide additional explanations that make the topic clearer.

However, I do not think students are becoming completely dependent on AI. Not every student has access to a smartphone or the internet, and some rely solely on what they learn in school and their own efforts. For those who do have access, AI should serve as a guide rather than a substitute for learning.

I have used AI tools mainly to carry out research on the course I hope to study at the university. They provide quick access to information and help me learn more about subjects and career paths that interest me. However, I think many students are becoming too dependent on AI because they expect it to provide answers without making much effort themselves. As a result, some students no longer take time to think critically or develop their own ideas.

AI tools have become useful for my studies because they help me learn beyond what is available in my textbooks. Whenever I come across a topic I don’t fully understand, I use AI to carry out further research and gain a better understanding.  At the same time, I believe many students are becoming too dependent on AI. Some students simply search for answers for their assignments and copy them just to earn marks. This habit can affect their ability to think independently and solve problems on their own.

Ariyo Progress, 13 yrs old

I use AI mainly to help with my assignments and to find encouraging words whenever I feel sad or bored. Apart from assisting with schoolwork, it also serves as a source of motivation and inspiration during difficult moments.

AI provides simple explanations that can help them gain a better understanding of difficult topics and improve their learning.

However, I also think some students are becoming too dependent on AI. Instead of attempting their assignments on their own, they rely on AI to provide answers to every question. This habit can make students less willing to think independently or put effort into solving problems by themselves.
