Residents of two communities in Tungamaje, Abuja, are facing possible demolition after receiving an order to vacate their homes by Wednesday, August 12, amid a longstanding land dispute involving the Nigerian Army.
Residents of Angwa Dio and Angwa Shibaba, both located in Tungamaje in the Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, have reportedly been directed to leave their homes as the Army prepares to demolish houses said to have been marked within the affected areas.
According to reports, more than 30 houses have been earmarked for demolition across the two communities.
The residents were initially given until Saturday, August 8, to vacate the area. However, following intervention by community stakeholders, the deadline was reportedly extended by five days to Wednesday, August 12.
Residents say the directive has created fear and uncertainty, particularly among families who have lived in the communities for years and are now unsure where they would relocate if the demolition goes ahead.
A community source reportedly said residents who appealed against the eviction were told that the directive was an “order from above,” leaving them with little room to negotiate.
The development is believed to be connected to a long-running dispute over land ownership and access to farmland between residents of Tungamaje and personnel of the Nigerian Army.
The dispute has reportedly intensified in recent months, with residents previously raising concerns over alleged attempts to remove people from land they regard as ancestral property.
As the August 12 deadline approaches, affected residents are calling for urgent intervention from relevant authorities and stakeholders to prevent what they fear could result in homelessness and further escalation of the land dispute.
The Nigerian Army’s position on the latest eviction and demolition directive was not independently established in the reports reviewed.
